Modal Verbs



MODAL VERBS
Modal merupakan kata Bantu untuk membentuk arti tertentu pada verba utama dalam suatu kalimat. Modal Verbs disebut juga Auxiliary Verbs yaitu terdiri dari kata-kata kerja bantu seperti:
1. Will
Digunakan untuk menanyakan suatu tindakan atau keadaan yang akan terjadi diwaktu yang akan datang.
e.g.
- we will go by train
- she will happy to meet us

2. Shall
Digunakan untuk menyatakan kehendak atau tekad agar seorang melakukan sesuatu yang dikehendaki penutur.
e.g.
- he shall do as I say
- he shall here at seven o’clock tomorrow morning

3. Can
Digunakan untuk menyatakan kemampuan untuk melakukan tindakan yang dinyatakan oleh verna utama.
e.g.
- my brother can drive a car
- she can speak English

4. Could
Menyatakan kemampuan di waktu yang lampau, sebagai bentuk halus atau hormat dalam permintaan atau permohonan.
e.g.
- my father could play football when he was young
- could you help me a moment?

5. Would
Digunakan jika verba dalam klausa utama (Main Clause) bentuk verba lampau, juga digunakan untuk menyatakan keinginan. Penggunaan would lebih halus dari pada menggunakan will.
e.g.
- I know that she would come
- would you please close the door?
- I would like to a cup of coffee
- what would you like to eat?

6. Should
Digunakan untuk menyatakan kewajiban dan anjuran.
e.g.
- you should tell the truth (kewajiban)
- you should take a rest when you are tried (anjuran)


7. May

Di dunakan untuk ijin atau mengandung arti kemungkinan
e.g.
- she may come to school a little late tomorrow
- you may leave the room now

8. Must
Digunakan untuk menyatakan kemampuan atau dugaan kuat mengenai suatu kejadian atau tindakan.
e.g. - you must go now (you have to go now)
- Santi is going to see the doctor, she must be sick


Modal +Prefect Tense

A. Ought to (should) + have + V3 (Past Participle)
Digunajan untuk menyatan adanya suatu tindakan pada waktu lampau (seharusnya telah … ) yang tidak dipenuhi.
e.g.
- Nining did not do her home work yesterday
- she should have to done it
- Dian and Siti did not say anything
- they ought to have said something
- Yeni left an hour ago
- she should have arrived there by now
- the doctor give him best medicine
- he ought to have recovered

B. Could + have + V3 (Past Participle)
Digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu dengan menduga-duga, arti yang terkandung oleh bentuk “could + have + V3” adalah “kemungkinan besar”.
e.g.
- Siti didn’t ask Ayu to help me
- she could have helped
- they didn’t play hard enough
- they could have won the match
- Lia can not fine her English book
- her friend could have taken it by mistake
- Roni didn’t come to the meeting last night
- he could have forgotten about it

C. May (might) + have + V3 (Past Participle)
Digunakan untuk menyatakan sesuatu kemungkinan (berdasarkan dugaan atau perkiraan) pada waktu lampau.
e.g.
- my son cried in his sleep last night
- he may (might) have had a bad dream
- Nani wasn’t at home when Siti visited her last night
- she may (might) have gone to the market

D. Must + have + V3 (Past Participle
)
Didunakan untuk menyatakan/menyimpulkan bahwa sesuatu peristiwa terjada pada waktu lampau.
e.g.
- Siti usually keeps her promise, she had promised to come to Nani birthday, but she wasn’t there
- something must have happened to her
- I saw Andy in hospital last mouth, he look pale and thin
- he must have been sick
